Faith Builds

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Faith

  1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
  2. strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

I think my definition of faith would combine these two from Miriam Webster. I would say faith is complete trust or confidence in God without the need of proof that He deserves it.

Faith requires trust and trust does not come easy. We all have baggage we carry that has built walls around us. We are hesitant to trust anyone completely. But one way God rewards our faith in Him is actually by building the proof that He can be trusted. Every single time you go out on faith, God comes through again and again. You drop that baggage at His feet and He hands you more faith.

Our God is faithful to us. It is our turn to step out in our faith and believe in Him.

Lord, I step out in faith today because I know You will catch me. ~amen

God’s Love

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I think part of today’s verse is one of the most misquoted verses ever. Verse 39 is often quoted as saying neither height nor depth, not anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from God. That is not what it says. It says will be able to separate us “from the love of” God.

It is very possible for us to walk away from God. We can turn our backs on Him and say we are finished with all this religious stuff. You may know someone who had done this. Heck, you may have done it yourself. God will release you, and let you do your own thing. However, He will never stop loving you. He will never stop waiting for you to turn around and come running back.

So, in a way, the misquote is not really wrong either. Nothing you can do is so bad, or so big that if you turn around, God will still be waiting for you. He will NEVER stop loving you and wanting you to just love him back.

God, I am so thankful that nothing will stop You from loving me. ~amen

More Than Conquerors

Romans 8:37

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

What does it mean to be more than a conqueror? I guess to answer that we should determine what is a conqueror. According to Merriam-Webster, it is someone who subdues or subjugates a people or overcomes an adversary. What more could there be than to overcome an adversary?

We know that our ultimate goal is to get to Heaven. If Heaven is our goal then it could be said life is our adversary. I think we could all agree with that one by looking around. Pick up a newspaper or listen to the news for five minutes if you disagree with me.

So, back to the original questions what does it mean to be MORE than a conqueror? To me, it is as simple as not just surviving, but thriving. God never intended for us to merely live. He wanted us to have a life filled with peace, love, and joy. Yes, there is adversity all around, but we can go through the storms hanging on to God and His peace. We can live in between the storms with joy. We can experience and fill the world around us with love. That is how we become more than conquerors!

Lord, I want to live today as more than a conqueror. ~amen

Don’t Panic!

Psalms 34:4

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

Anxiety and panic attacks are not fun! They are perceived fears with no real threat around you. I hate saying it that way. What I am saying is this is not a grizzly chasing you down kind of fear. The fear in your head is absolutely real, but the reason for the fear is irrational. However, it will stop you in your tracks!

Guess what? God is bigger than your fear. He can, wants to, and will deliver you from your fears. Now, I want you to know that I am in no way suggesting you should stop getting help or taking any meds you take, if you do, for this issue. Heck, that just may be the way God is helping deliver you from your fears. I am saying Seek God. He is right there to get you through.

The number one way to get through a panic attack is to focus on something else. If you seek God, your mind is focused on the best thing ever. That focus breaks the hold the fear has on you. Once again, God proves He is bigger than the Boogieman.

Lord, I am grateful You are so much bigger than my fears. I want to keep my focus on you. ~amen

Finding Your Joy

Psalms 28:7

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.

Have you ever been asked, “How are you getting through this and still smiling?” I have been asked that question in different ways. I can only answer it in one way, “God!”

I know that answer may seem simple or even unrealistic to some. I call it miraculous. We go through things in life and yet still manage to well, go through. We want to fall apart. We think we might at any moment, but we don’t. We just keep making that next step. We find strength and even a little peace in our hope for a brighter tomorrow. We rely on God to get us through.

Honesty moment, sometimes God is pulling me through. Other times He is pushing me through. However, in those moments where I just let go and let God, is when He carries me through. It is then, I find true peace and can breathe for a moment. It is at that point, my heart can leap for joy again.

Lord, thank you for being my strength in all situations. ~amen

I Shall Not Be Moved

Isaiah 54:10

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

I shall not be, I shall not be moved
I shall not be, I shall not be moved
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water
I shall not be moved

This is a song we use to sing at the church where I grew up. It was a reminder that if we have deep roots we can survive any storm. Those roots have to be growing in God. He is the one that keeps us stable.

Notice the song and today’s verse in Isaiah do not say we will be exempt from storms. They do not say our lives will be filled with sunshine and rainbows. Nope, it says though the mountains be shaken. It is saying when the storms come. Sometimes those storms are gentle rains and other times it is a full catastrophic 157 mph wind of a category 5 hurricane. However, in the end, it does not matter because you will not be moved. You are rooted in the peace God has promised you. You shall not be, you shall not be moved!

Somedays Lord, it seems my world is rocking all around me, but I know with you I shall not be moved! ~amen

Check Your Attitude

Romans 15:5

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had,

There is a verse a little farther down in Romans 15 that I believe goes well with today’s verse. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).‬ ‭You combine these two verses and you have the perfect blessing over everyone’s life. What more could you ask for?

I have to point out though, the last portion of verse 5 is so important. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all had the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had? If we could only take a moment and look past our differences and love each other anyway.

Can I tell you a secret? The entire world will never gain this attitude, but you can. Your world can be governed by this thought. You can spread Christ’s love for others by simply loving others. Grab on to that joy, peace, hope, endurance, and encouragement that God so freely gives. Then pass it on with the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.

Lord, I want an attitude like Yours. Help me share your love toward others today. ~amen

Just a Piece in the Puzzle

Psalms 37:7

Be still before the LORD
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.

I loved watching a TV show called Psych. It was about a guy who was overly observant and could solve crimes. However, the only way he could get people to believe him was to act as a psychic. That is very over simplified, but the jest of it. Quite often in the episodes, he would say, “Wait for it. . .” Then something would come to light. When I read today’s verse I couldn’t help but hear this phrase.

Waiting is not an easy thing to do. Heck, I am convinced that patience is a cuss word . . . LOL! However, we can’t do one thing God can. We cannot see the whole picture. We only see a puzzle piece of what is going on and often the piece looks bad, really bad. God sees how bad it is too, but He also sees how it fits to the next piece and the next one and soon those bad pieces turn into a beautiful picture. We just have to wait for it.

So, the next time life around you is looking really bad, remember it is just a piece of your life, not the entire puzzle. The ultimate puzzle master is still in charge and your picture will turn out beautiful.

Lord, today is just a piece in my beautiful puzzle. Good or bad, I will hang on for the entire picture. ~amen

You Can Do It!

Hebrews 12:11

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

The definitions of discipline don’t even sound like fun.

  • control gained by enforcing obedience or order, to bring a group under control
  • training , instruction, and exercise that corrects, molds, or perfects moral character for self-control
  • a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity
  • to punish or penalize for the sake of enforcing obedience and perfecting moral character to train or develop by instruction and exercise.

Let’s be honest for a moment. Hebrews 12:11 is absolutely correct. If you have ever strived to learn how to do something or practiced something, or even fought to get into shape, you understand it. Heck, if you even made it through school, you get it.

Life in general is not easy. However, we fight through it. We try to be better than we were yesterday. When we do all of this we learn, we grow, and we do find peace in it.

Lord, discipline is not fun. However, I will continue in it to grow. ~amen

Cheerful Heart

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

No one should be pressuring you to give. What you give, when you give, and how much you give is between you and God. This doesn’t matter if you are talking about money, time, or items.

Yes, giving is an important part of service as a Christian. Just the idea of service is based on giving of yourself. However, your attitude about giving is just as important. Giving with a grumbling heart is not really giving. Giving with an expectation of getting is not really giving. You ready for this one? Giving because you feel obligated, isn’t really true giving either.

When there is a need and you want to reach out and give ask God what you need to do. Then follow through with it. Again, I want to point out this isn’t always money. Often, it is giving up your time or items you already have. There are times it may even just be giving a smile.

Pray for God to show you where and what to give. Don’t be reluctant or under compulsion. You will be amazed at just how cheerful you will feel.

Lord, show me today where and what I need to give. ~amen
