What is Love

What is love? Well, I think that is an easy answer. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Answering that question is easy, however, doing the actual loving isn’t always so easy.

There are a million songs about love, but “Love is A Battlefield” by Pat Benatar is probably one of the most truthful songs or at least the title. Love is not some feeling that magically appears over a crowded room when your eyes meet. It may be planted that way, but like all plants, you have to cultivate it. You have to be intentional with it. You have to be ready to say, “I love you, so I am going to fight to be patient, kind, not envious, boastful, or proud. I will not dishonor you, or be self-seeding. I will work to not become angry or keep wrongs against you. I will fight to protect, trust, and hope in you. I will fight my selfish ways to preserve all relationships including the one with myself. I know love is a battlefield!
